Yes, having underlay protects your laminate from moisture rising, it can also even out little deficiencies (smaller than 3mm). Some underlays offer an acoustic value to the laminate taking away that tapping sound when walking over it.
We recommend buying new underlay and not using old ones that have been previously used, as it may be damaged or flattened from being under a previous floor.
